Built by a Dad, Powered by AI
From homework chaos to structured practice—how one exhausted parent turned a nightly struggle into a solution for families everywhere.
The "Forensics" of Homework
I am a father to a 5th grader in a wonderful school district. But let's be honest: teachers have more students than ever, and parents are busier than ever. I found myself drowning in a sea of apps, emails, and crumpled worksheets.
I wanted to help my son master math concepts, not just finish assignments. We would finish a worksheet, and I'd wish we had five more questions just like it to lock in the learning. I started manually typing up copycat questions, but it was exhausting.
"Reviewing his work became a forensics crime scene operation—sifting through eraser shavings and loose papers just to find where he solved Question #7."
As an IT professional, I knew there had to be a better way. I began looking for tools to turn our homework struggles into structured practice. Leveraging the power of modern Artificial Intelligence to accelerate development, I built a platform that would usually require a massive team.
The result is Upwardly: a distraction-free zone where students can focus on one question at a time. It's designed to let them work comfortably—whether that's at a desk or chilling on the couch—while parents get a break from the "forensics."

A Community-Driven Approach
Upwardly currently focuses on Math for Grades 1–6, but this is just the beginning. I am building this with you, not just for you. I don't have a board of directors; I have a community of parents.
If you need a specific type of practice problem, you don't have to wait for a corporate roadmap meeting. You can just ask. My goal is to create the content our kids actually need, based on what they are actually learning in real-time.
Practice Makes Progress
Learning happens through repeated practice using different takes on the same concepts. This helps identify cracks in understanding, and those become opportunities to bridge gaps.
Built for Real Families
A platform that mirrors the actual work kids see in school. Keep practicing concepts until they've demonstrated mastery—no forensics required.
About Those Game Elements...
Too many educational apps turn learning into a video game that quickly detaches from the real-life quizzes and tests kids will take at school. I want to maintain a healthy distance from that. But that doesn't mean we can't have any fun!
Today, Upwardly includes light elements of video game culture in our practice sheets. We reward students who get it right the first time, but we also don't punish them for asking for help. There's a difference between using a hint to understand a concept and blindly guessing until you stumble onto the right answer.
What the game elements look like today:
- ✔Bonus points for correct answers on the first try
- ✔Reduced points for hints—but you still earn, because asking for help matters
- ✔Celebration screen when completing a practice guide
- ✔Level tracking that grows across practice units
The level system gives students a sense of progress beyond just the 8 to 12 questions in any single session. As a parent, I leave it up to you whether to reward them for reaching level goals or hitting accuracy milestones—you know your kid best.
I'm genuinely interested in parent and student feedback on whether we have the game elements dialed in too low or too high. This is another area where we can figure it out together. Let me know what you think.
Why We Don't Do Annual Contracts
Most apps lock you into a 1-year term to get their "affordable" price. They bank on you forgetting you subscribed.
Upwardly is different. As a new business, I want to earn your trust month after month. All our subscriptions are monthly, yet priced at the rates competitors only offer for yearly lock-ins.
If we stop bringing you value, you should be free to leave. That keeps us on our toes and ensures we are always improving.
What We Believe
These core values guide everything we build.
Freedom from Contracts
Monthly subscriptions at annual-equivalent rates. We earn your trust every 30 days.
Community-Led Innovation
You speak, the developer listens. Features are built based on direct parent feedback.
Flexible Learning Resources
We leverage technology to create dynamic study resources. Sometimes students need more practice on this concept or that—we make it easy for parents to supplement.
Mastery, Not Addiction
Gamification used to encourage, not to distract. Learning comes first.
A Father Who Gets It
I am leveraging this unique moment in history to pass the power (and the savings) back to you. My size is my advantage: I can move faster, listen closer, and care more than the giants can.
No corporate roadmaps. No board of directors. Just a dad who's been through the homework trenches and wants to make it easier for everyone.
Have ideas for how we can make Upwardly better? You can just ask.
